Tennessee Student Admitted to Hospital Over 'Alcohol Enema'
ByA University of Tennessee Student was rushed to the hospital after alcohol poisoning following a party at the fraternity house over weekend.
Alexander Broughton, a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha, had a blood-alcohol level thought to be 'well over' 0.40 percent-five times the legal level of intoxication- ingested the alcohol by a method known as 'butt chugging,' in which wine was inserted directly by a tube into his rectum for quick and potent absorption, reports Knox News.
Whether he wilfully indulged in the bizarre consumption of alcohol or was he forcefully complied is not known as of yet.
The incident on Saturday led the UT officers to the Pike (Pi Kappa Alpha) House, where they found a bunch of intoxicated frat students 'and bags from wine boxes, some empty and some partially empty, strewn across the halls and rooms,' the records show, released by the UT officials.
They were reportedly issued citations but not criminally charged.
Meanwhile, Pi Kappa Alpha's UT chapter was administratively suspended for 30 days by Pi Kappa Alpha International Monday. But, the decision on the permanent status is pending.
UTPD is leading the investigation into the incident, assisted by the Knoxville Police.
The episode instantly made national news, with CNN rushing to the campus.
Tim Rogers, UT's vice chancellor addressed the media over the allegations Wednesday while officers released the records of the investigation.
"It has, in some way, tarnished the entire Volunteer family, and we hope to overcome that with the other 27,000-plus students that weren't involved in this, and again, we've got to get to the bottom [of this], but it certainly has given us more than a black eye," said Rogers.
This is not the first time the fraternity has landed itself in trouble. The newly released records show Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity has been lodged in and out of trouble since 2008, reports wbir.com.
In early 2008, they hazed pledges and did not cooperate with university officials in the ensuing investigation which led to Pike's suspension for a whole semester and social probation for following three semesters.
In April 2010 was placed on disciplinary probation for two semesters. While still under probation, in October 2010, they were disciplined again.
Its saga of disciplinary actions doesn't seem to end in the records released.
The father of Alexander Broughton, said his son is 'medically fine' and did not blame the fraternity for the incident.
