Kentucky Basketball Recruiting News: Wenyen Gabriel Commits to John Calipari, Wildcats
ByJohn Calipari secured another commitment from a highly touted big man in the class of 2016 in five-star power forward Wenyen Gabriel.
According to ESPN.com, Gabriel had narrowed his selection of schools to Kentucky, Duke, Maryland, Connecticut, and Providence. He said he felt strong connections with the coaching staffs of all five, but none stronger than with Calipari and Mike Krzyzewski.
"I felt a connection to all the coaches in my final five, but ultimately it came down to Duke and Kentucky, and I just felt like I couldn't go wrong either way," Gabriel told ESPN.com. "Kentucky made it clear that they had a plan for me personally and for helping me to take my game to the next level."
Gabriel ranks 23rd on the 2016 ESPN 100 and is the sixth overall power forward on the list. 247 Sports gave him a 0.9937 composite score, but ranked him within the top five at his position.
Kentucky is also pursuing Harry Giles, the top overall prospect in the class of 2016 who is also a power forward. But Calipari also secured a verbal commitment from Sacha Killeya-Jones, a four-star power forward.
Evaluators indicated the two could be able to play together, as Gabriel has proven his ability to defend on the perimeter and is a good shot blocker as well. Kentucky is expected to continue its pursuit of Giles, as well as Bam Adebayo, a five-star power forward.
