Southern Illinois University on Threat Watch by FBI, Police
ByThe Southern Illinois University Carbondale campus is being watched by the federal investigators and local police after an alleged threat was leveled against the university.
The specifics of the threat are not unveiled, but it has been confirmed that the threat was made through email.
The threats credibility is still in a dubious state, but the university issued a statement saying that it is closely monitoring the situation, reports wpsdlocal.
"I encourage everyone to maintain their normal schedules and daily assignments at this time," SIU Chancellor Rita Cheng said.
"SIU administrators and the Department of Public Safety are taking this threat very seriously. The safety of students, faculty and staff are the University's number one priority. Our campus security team is working with the FBI and will take all precautions necessary to address any safety concerns," reads the statement.
The threat appears not to have had any effect on the students and the campus is buzzing with activity as usual. The classes have not been cancelled or delayed due to the threat. The type of danger has also not been specified by the university. Hence, at the moment, most at the campus believe that the threat isn't legitimate.
Last week, North Dakota State University Fargo campus, University of Texas at Austin and Hiram college received bomb threats, which ended in mass evacuation. Same went with the Arkansas and Louisiana State Universities. But, in the case of latter two universities, there have been arrests.
None of the arrests have any connection with terrorism in general and al-Queda in particular and the arrested suspects are locals.
Valparaiso University in Indiana too received threats around the same time as others, but strangely, the vague threat was made through graffiti.
In the wake of Middle East violence and international protests against an alleged anti-Islam American-made YouTube movie, no academic institution is in mood to gamble with the safety of its students and staff.
