SMU Basketball NCAA Sanctions: Postseason Ban, Larry Brown Suspended 9 Games (REPORTS)
ByThe NCAA handed down sanctions to the Southern Methodist University (SMU) men's basketball program, barring the team from postseason play in 2016.
Citing an unnamed source, ESPN reported Tuesday that the NCAA also suspended head coach Larry Brown for nine games, or 30 percent of the team's schedule. Brown reportedly received the lack of control charge often applied to athletic head coaches whose players and staff commit infractions.
CBS Sports confirmed the report, citing its own anonymous source.
Over the next three years, ESPN learned, SMU men's basketball will lose a total of nine scholarships and will be placed on probation during that timeframe. The sanctions are apparently open to an appeal, but it is unclear if that is the action SMU will take.
The school released a one-line statement on its website stating only that administrators received notice from the NCAA.
ESPN previously reported that the NCAA was investigating allegations of improper academic help provided by a former SMU men's basketball assistant named Ulric Maligi. Keith Frazier, a junior guard currently on the team, allegedly accepted the help to stay academically eligible.
Maligi took a leave of absence from the team in Jan., but it appears as though he did not participate in the NCAA's probe. Frazier was declared ineligible in the middle of last season and missed significant playing time as a result.
ESPN learned that Brown likely had no knowledge of Maligi's actions, but the NCAA has consistently held head coaches responsible for the actions of assistants, no matter how covert. ESPN also learned that Brown did not immediately report the alleged activity when he learned of it due to a misunderstanding of the violation.
