Suspect Arrested within Hours of Bomb Threat to Students Residence
ByA suspect who is accused of making a false bomb threat to the Arkansas State University has been arrested within hours of the threat.
Carlon Walker, 44 has been taken into custody by Arkansas State University police officers for allegedly making a bomb threat against University Hall, a women's residence housing nearly 400 students, reports the ASU student newspaper The Herald citing a press release issued at 6.32 p.m. local time Tuesday.
Following the anonymous call about the threat at 2.45 p.m. university authorities evacuated the hall and the International Student Center which is close to the hall as a precautionary measure.
"The safety of our students is always our first concern," said Dr. Rick Stripling, vice chancellor for Student Affairs. "The university wants to ensure all safety procedures are followed and that students are properly notified when any unforeseen event occurs on our campus."
At 3.05 p.m., the entire campus community was notified about the threat through ASU's emergency alert system which involves text messaging, social media, emails and the university's official website. The students were asked to stay at least 300 ft away from the targeted areas.
According to the university, ASU police conducted a room-by-room sweep of University Hall with a sniffer dog provided by the Crittenden County sheriff's department.
At 5.37 p.m. university police issued a second alert stating there was no longer a threat and students were cleared to return to their rooms. No evidence of a bomb was found during the search.
The motive behind the call is yet to be learned. University said that the suspect is not an ASU student and was reportedly taken to Craighead County jail following the arrest.
This is the latest in the string of bomb threats being made to the universities across states that began last week following the Middle East violence.
Over the weekend, North Dakota State University Fargo campus, University of Texas at Austin and a smaller Hiram college in Ohio were threatened by anonymous callers and had to evacuate their campuses entirely. On Monday, Louisiana State had to go through same experience, but no arrests have been made in these cases yet.
