Florida Football: Treon Harris, Jalen Tabor Suspended 1 Game for Undisclosed Violation
ByFlorida head football coach Jim McElwain suspended quarterback Treon Harris and cornerback Jalen Tabor for the Gators' home game against Tennessee on Saturday.
According to The Associated Press, McElwain made the announcement Thursday after practice, referencing "choices" the players made rather than a specific reason. Both players will sit out one game.
McElwain had not solidified his permanent starting QB, but Harris' absence will allow Will Grier to play the entire game against Tennessee. The coach stated Josh Grady, a QB who played wide receiver at Vanderbilt last season, will be Grier's backup on Saturday.
"They won't be with us this week," McElwain told reporters of Harris and Tabor. "We need some guys to step up. They'll be back next week."
Citing unnamed sources, ESPN's Brett McMurphy reported Harris failed a drug test and Tabor refused to take one, which triggered an automatic suspension. Tabor previously received a marijuana citation in May.
After splitting time through Florida's first two games, Harris did not play against Kentucky and may well return to be Grier's backup. Harris started the Gators' season opener against New Mexico State, but Grier has started every game since.
"Disappointed? Yeah," McElwain said. "But we all have choices and decisions to make in everything we do. It wasn't anything we did. The team didn't do.
"I feel bad for the team is who I feel bad for."
