Florida Football Roster 2015: Jim McElwain Names Will Grier Starting QB vs Kentucky, Will Still Play Treon Harris
ByIn an ongoing quarterback competition, Florida head football coach Jim McElwain will start Will Grier against Kentucky for the Gators' SEC opener.
McElwain also stated he does not foresee an end to quarterback competition and only indicated he would play the better player. Thus far, it appears that McElwain could not even make a final decision if he wanted to, as Grier and Treon Harris have been just about neck-and-neck.
"If a guy's hitting it and distributing it and has a good stroke, then we'll go with it," the coach said in a press conference Wednesday, according to The Associated Press.
Grier, a redshirt freshman, has completed 26 passes in 35 attempts in two games this season, throwing for 317 yards and four touchdowns. Harris has 27 pass attempts with 19 completions, as well as 269 yards through the air and two touchdowns.
Florida is 2-0 and sits in a tie with Georgia, Kentucky, and Missouri for the lead in the SEC East. Both Georgia (ranked seventh in the nation) and Missouri are playing winnable games at home, so beating Kentucky will be important for Florida in keeping pace.
After Kentucky, Florida will go into a grueling stretch, facing Tennessee and Ole Miss at home, then Missouri and LSU on the road, before returning to Gainesville to host Georgia. But McElwain is not overlooking his current opponent.
"This team we're playing is not your same old Kentucky," he told the Gators' official website. "These guys are really good."
Regardless of who is starting and who is finishing games, McElwain stated both Grier and Harris are acting like full-time starters.
"Here's the good thing: both guys are really studying the game plan. I think that's a really good thing," he said. "You don't have a starter doing all the work and the other guy coming and get half of it and all of a sudden it's my turn. You've got to prepare yourself like the starter."
