Police in Gautier, Miss. believe the man who shot and killed a woman in their town Monday morning traveled to Cleveland, where he murdered Ethan Schmidt, a professor at Delta State University (DSU).

Detective Matt Hoggatt, of the Gautier Police Department (GPD), told CNN the suspect, Shannon Lamb, was spotted leaving Gautier in a green SUV, and that the same kind of vehicle was spotted in connection to the DSU shooting.

However, police investigating Schmidt's murder have not named a suspect, but they believe the gunman acted alone.

CNN previously confirmed with Bolivar County Deputy Coroner Murray Roark that Schmidt was shot in the head in his office in Jobe Hall.

According to The Sun Herald, the GPD named Lamb, also a professor at DSU, as their primary suspect. Hoggatt told the newspaper Lamb called the police to report the shooting in Gautier, which occurred at a house on Santa Cruz Street.

Fox 13 in Memphis confirmed the police do not believe Schmidt's shooter is still on DSU's Cleveland, Miss. campus. The station reported around 12:30 that there were two people confirmed dead, but no details were available concerning the second victim. It is unclear if that second victim was the woman in Gautier, as police investigating the DSU shooting have not formally named a suspect.

The GPD held its press conference just after noon, which was more than an hour after DSU implemented its lockdown. Fox 13's report about two people confirmed dead came just after 12:34 p.m. and less than an hour later, the station learned the police were searching for another DSU professor.

WLOX learned the Miss. Highway Patrol, one of multiple agencies searching for Schmidt's killer, considers Lamb a person of interest, not a suspect.

DSU cancelled classes for the remainder of the day Monday and for Tuesday as well. The school has been updating its campus community as the various developments unfolded.
