University of Montana's Tutorial on Consequences of Sexual Violence
ByUniversity of Montana has had a rough year with two of its Grizzly players being charged with rape. Hence, in an attempt to clear the air in the campus ridden with sexual assault charges, the university is launching a tutorial on sexual violence in campus.
The university has reportedly created a new online tutorial 'to educate students about sexual violence issues.'
The tutorials are part of the training session titled 'Personal Empowerment Through Self-Awareness' and is mandatory for all the university students. These tutorials will consist of small, informative videos on sexual violence which will immediately be followed by a series of questions which every student must answer within 20-30 minutes.
The university has stressed on the fact that unless the students complete the training session by passing the quiz they cannot move on to the spring semester. But they are allowed to take it as many times as they need.
"Sexual violence of any type will not be tolerated on our campus, and those who engage in this predatory behavior will be held accountable," said UM President Royce Engstrom in an introductory video. "We are strategically working toward a violence-free campus, and this online course is one critical component."
The university said the subjects addressed in the videos include the law, consent, predatory behavior, myths and facts, personal empowerment, how to intervene and to get help. The videos are said to be concise and very 'hard-hitting'.
According to Danielle Wozniak who chairs the University Council on Student Assault and the driving force behind the PETSA, the training has been tested with several student groups, and initial reactions have been overwhelmingly positive and generated healthy discussion.
She also added that plans are being made to follow this training up with face-to-face campus discussion forums during autumn semester.
This strategic move by the university in the wake of sexual assault charges is not entirely unexpected. It is the season of repairing damages and rebooting the brand names.
Recently, Penn State University battered by the Sandusky Sex scandal announced its plan to hold a symposium on child sex abuse. Now, it's UM's turn to reverse the marred reputation of the university and its players.
The PETSA seems to be the university's way of resuscitating its image.
The video tutorial of PETSA is a result of the joint effort by UM's School of Media Arts, UMOnline and others.
