Ohio State head football coach Urban Meyer stayed true to his word and named his starting quarterback just before kickoff, but the revelation for the Buckeyes in their season opener was not who the primary passer was.

Cardale Jones took Ohio State's first snap and played the vast majority of the game, though J.T. Barrett came in to wrap up the 42-24 victory over Virginia Tech. But Jones' contribution was not the story of the night.

With three offensive playmakers suspended for the game, Ohio State was left with running back Ezekiel Elliott in the backfield and Braxton Miller, a former QB playing his first game at wide receiver as Jones' primary weapons.

Elliott took 11 carries for 122 yards and one touchdown while Miller caught two passes and took six carries for a combined 140 yards and two touchdowns. To boot, he also made the play of the game (see 2:28 mark of the highlight video above).

"I definitely did. I set them up," ESPN quoted Miller telling reporters in his postgame press conference. "I acted like I was looking straight but I seen them out of the corner of my eye."

Miller's touchdown run came in the wildcat formation where he lined up as the QB, though the former two-time Big Ten offensive player of the year will not likely be throwing passes any time soon. For now, Jones will be Meyer's starting QB, with Barrett likely to play late in the game to get reps and stay fresh.

True to his word, Meyer did not name a starter until it was time to play. And the competition, in all likelihood, is not over.

"Honestly, we both went out in the huddle with the first play," ESPN quoted Jones telling reporters after the game. "We didn't know. I was taking a couple steps to the sideline, and [Meyer] was like, 'No, you're in.' When you found out, I found out."
