CU-Boulder Chancellor Differs With Faculty Over Guns
ByWhile presidential candidates are refusing to take a stand over the gun control laws despite the pressure, CU-Boulder is making news for the statements by its leaders and faculty on gun control.
Philip P. DiStefano, vice chancellor of University of Colorado Boulder has said that no professor can cancel the classes or 'refuse to teach' if they find a student with Concealed Carry Permit carrying a firearm.
His statement has come in response to the comments made by one of the university faculty, Jerry Peterson, a Physics Professor and chairman of the Boulder Faculty Assembly, who said he would not allow students carrying weapons to sit in his class.
"My own personal policy in my classes is if I am aware that there is a firearm in the class -- registered or unregistered, concealed or unconcealed -- the class session is immediately canceled," Peterson told to the Daily Camera newspaper.
In an email sent to the faculty members, cited by Daily Camera, Distefano said, "I have the utmost respect for Professor Peterson, who is an old friend and valued colleague, but I want to make clear that if the student carrying the weapon has a concealed-carry permit, the position implied by Professor Peterson's comments directly violates Colorado law and the operating principles of the campus."
Distefano also reportedly added in the same email that the cancellation of classes will be a discrimination against the students with CCP and all other students will be 'deprived of the education they paid for'.
Earlier this year, the Supreme Court of Colorado ruled that the university cannot prohibit its students from carrying weapons within the premises. Hence, the university announced some changes Aug.16 including providing separate housing facilities for those who carry firearms on a pre-condition that they will lock them in their residence before leaving.
Even after Distefano's refuting statement, Peterson said that he will not change his opinion as he want his students to feel safe while discussing controversial topics and the knowledge of guns' presence 'would destroy the learning environment.'
Bronson Hilliard, spokesman for the Boulder campus, told Daily Camera the university officials acknowledge Peterson's concern for safety of his students but stated that students with CCP are allowed to carry the firearms.
But Hilliard did not reveal anything about the disciplinary actions against professors cancelling classes over gun-carrying students.
Meanwhile, according to the Colorado daily report, the Colorado University police are in pursuit of two suspects in an alleged assault that took place around midnight near Norlin Library on the Boulder campus.
