Florida State head football coach Jimbo Fisher named Everett Golson the starting quarterback of the Seminoles football team.

Golson transferred to Florida State from Notre Dame after graduating, making him eligible to play right away at his new school. He competed against Sean Maguire, a two-year backup, this spring, ESPN reported.

Fisher made his announcement Monday after practice, telling reporters he finalized his decision.

"Where we're at right now and the things [Golson] did, it's what's best for our team at this particular time," Fisher told reporters. "It was a tougher decision because of how well they were playing and not because of what they weren't doing. I'm very pleased with [Golson's] progress and where he's at. He's got a good grasp of things, making reads, making plays, getting on the edge with his legs when he has to. He's doing everything we need to do."

Golson lead Notre Dame to the BCS National Championship Game in 2012, his freshman year. After missing the next season due to an academic suspension, he returned to Notre Dame and improved on his individual stats, but Notre Dame regressed.

Fisher also said he will not want Golson to fear losing the starting position too easily. Maguire will be the backup, but Golson will not have a "short leash."

"I'm not going to short leash anybody. When I played I didn't want look over my shoulder and know every mistake I made I was getting yanked out. I don't coach that way, but I'll put the guys in the game who are winning football games if something needs to be done," Fisher told reporters. "But you can't play like that, can't coach like that. It's hard to function like that."
