With a week of preseason training camp officially in the books, Urban Meyer provided an update on Ohio Sate's starting quarterback competition.

Addressing reporters on Saturday, Meyer said he had not finalized his evaluation of a scrimmage that took place earlier in the day, Cleveland.com reported.

Without naming names, Meyer said one his starting QB candidates - either J.T. Barrett or Cardale Jones - began to separate himself before the other pulled even. The update could be an indication that Meyer would like to name a starter before the Buckeyes' season opener with Virginia Tech.

"I really thought in my mind two days ago that one guy was starting to move ahead of the other," Meyer told reporters, according to Cleveland.com.

The vague update also means that Meyer acknowledges the public's interest in the competition and wants to be as transparent as he can possibly be. He also may feel he owes it to Barrett and Jones to use a certain level of confidentiality.

"They're both doing good," Meyer said in his address Saturday. "I try to be a honest as I can, they're neck and neck."

Meyer has offered similarly vague updates on the QB competition, recently commenting that the two passers are getting along "unbelievably" well. But while Barrett and Jones maintain a strong friendship off the field and an excellent rapport on it, they are not open to sharing the starting position.

Both recently told ESPN they want to either be named the starter or the backup and both said they did not know how they could develop a rhythm if they had to rotate in and out of a game.

Meyer has not said whether or not he is considering running a two-QB system at Ohio State like the one he ran at Florida in 2006 with Chris Leak and Tim Tebow.
