Texas A&M Football Recruiting: Tate Martell's Verbal Committment Sets Up a Future High Profile QB Competition
ByKevin Sumlin and the Texas A&M Aggies appear poised to go from one highly touted quarterback prospect to another, securing a commitment from a top 2017 prospect.
On the brink of starting his junior year of high school at Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas, Nev., Tate Martell verbally committed to Texas A&M. on Thursday, publicizing the announcement on his Twitter account.
ESPN ranked Martell 32nd overall on the 2017 ESPN Jr. 300, but he came in as the second-overall pocket passing QB in his class. Texas A&M is currently managing a QB competition between Kyle Allen and Kyler Murray, an incoming freshman who was the top dual-threat QB in his class.
Martell projects to arrive in College Station in time to give Texas A&M another highly publicized QB competition.
"It's A&M, that's where I'm going," the 17-year-old Las Vegas passer told 247 Sports of his decision. "I knew where I wanted to go. I wasn't planning on committing this early but, when I went out there and took the visit, I just knew that's where I wanted to be."
With Sumlin at the helm and Jake Spavital in charge of the offense and the team's quarterbacks, Texas A&M is building a reputation as an ideal landing spot for young quarterbacks.
"The coaches are really cool," Martell told 247 Sports of Sumlin and his staff. "The facilities there are unreal and I just like the college feel at the school. It's not like a big city but it's its own college town. It's still a big football town though.
"The facilities there and the area that it's in, that's great. The town is great and the fanbase is unreal. Football in Texas is big-time."
247 Sports gave Martell a 0.9915 composite ranking and a five-star rating. The website also valued him much higher than ESPN, placing him first at his position and 12th overall in his class.
