The United Nations has said that the Democratic Republic of Congo is facing the worst outbreak of measles since 2010-2011, reports Reuters.
More than 1,085 people were killed and 77,000 were infected with measles in 2010-2011.
The outbreak has already killed 315 people and infected 20,000 in the Katanga province of Congo. The UN reported that the disease might have killed hundreds more in the remote areas that cannot be accessed.
The draft by UN reported that more than $2.4 million would be needed for vaccination drives and treatment.
"The measles epidemic in the province of Katanga is only worsening and gaining ground," said the UN report seen by Reuters.
Last November, the World Health Organization had warned that the efforts to control measles outbreak in the world have been stalled due to poor vaccination coverage in certain regions of the world.
Measles is a highly contagious disease. The early symptoms of the disease include high fever, dehydration, diarrhea and pneumonis
According to International Business Times, the Katanga region is prone to the outbreak of measles. Many cases often go unreported because access to much of the province is difficult and the roads in the region are in poor condition, with some areas not accessible by car.
