Texas A&M has a far less publicized quarterback battle set to take place in training camp next month than, say, Ohio State, but it is intriguing nonetheless.
With Kenny Hill transferred to TCU, the Aggies will start camp on Aug. 10, ESPN reported, with Kyle Allen and Kyler Murray competing to start on week one.
Hill got off to a torrid start and Allen's appearances were limited to finishing off blowout wins. However, Allen took over as the team's starter in week nine, following three straight losses and Hill struggling with turnovers. Allen led Texas A&M to a 3-2 finish, including a Victory Bowl game win, and is favored to start on week one.
However, Murray enters his freshman season as one of the top-ranked dual-threat QB recruits in the nation. His style of play may fit the system Kevin Sumlin is used to running at Texas A&M, but his inexperience needs to be taken into account.
Also vying for the starting role, albeit as a dark horse, is Jake Hubenak, a transfer from Blinn College.
Sumlin could also consider using a dual-quarterback system that would utilize both Allen and Murray in what they do best. He addressed the possibility at the SEC Media Days earlier this month, according to The Dallas Morning News.
"I really haven't done it before," Sumlin said of a dual-QB offense. "We'll see. We've never started out that way. That doesn't mean that we won't. We'll see where we are in fall. Kyle is confident right now and should be.
"Kyler is a guy who all he's done is won. It's like anything else. It's not like Kyler didn't know Kyle Allen was the MVP of the bowl game. That didn't stop him. He's coming to compete, and that's what makes both of those guys who they are. Kyle is the same way. He committed before Johnny's [Manziel] junior year. He didn't know what was going to happen. Those guys aren't going to back down from each other. That's going to make us a better football team. We'll make a decision."
