Apple filed a patent for touch-sensitive surfaces for their array of devices that would store solar cells in order to lengthen the device's battery life.

According to 9to5Mac, a website called PatentlyApple obtained a copy of the filing, but noted it does not mean Apple is going to implement the technology. Apple tends to file patents for all their promising technological ideas, even if they never materialize.

The solar-powered touch screen could apply to the iPhone or the Apple Watch's display, as well as the MacBook's track pad. While Apple continues to add more features and capabilities for its several product lines, they need a battery that can keep their devices operational long enough to enjoy them. A solar cell backup would likely be a universally praised piece of technology.

Per PatentlyApple, the company's filing states: "The wireless device has a touch sensor and a solar cell that converts ambient light into electrical power. Wireless communications circuitry transmits the touch input to the external equipment using the electrical power from the solar cell. Energy storage devices such as a capacitor and a battery can be charged using the electrical power."

In order to make their typical fall release for the new iPhones, Apple will be starting production in the coming months, so a solar-powered handset released this years seems unlikely.

An even more intriguing application for the patent would be for the iPad Pro, rumored to be shipped late this fall. However, the iPad Pro will probably have more business-oriented applications, so a solar-powered backup battery would come in handy.

Considering the iPad Pro is due out in Nov., it seems unlikely to get the solar-powered touch screen technology.
