Police waited late into the night Monday for a man posted up in a crane cab on the Southern Methodist University campus to surrender. It has since been reported that the man fell to his death early Tuesday, ending a more than 14-hour standoff.

The man, whose name has not been released, spent more than 14 hours in the crane that towers the campus in Univesity Park, Texas, and told officers he was armed and threatened to shoot anyone who approached him.

Special tactics officers were working with SMU campus police to manage the scene and try to talk the man down from the crane. At the time of this report, no injuries have been reported.

Dallas police Senior Cpl. Melinda Gutierres told the Associated Press that campus police called them and said a man had climbed into the crane and said he was possibly armed with a handgun, but that has yet to be confirmed.

The situation was first reported about 11:30 a.m. Monday.

Police have blocked off parts of the campus and much of Mockingbird Lane on the south side of the SMU campus, as well as access to a strip mall near the crane.

The crane cab Monday was fully exposed to considerable heat in the Texas sun. Tempratures today remain in the low 90s.
