Kanye West Blames Himself For His Mother's Tragic Death
ByHip-hop superstar Kanye West revealed to Q Magazine that he feels responsible for the tragic death of his mother in 2007.
Dr. Donda West, who was the 21-time Grammy winner's mentor, manager, and best friend, died at age 58 from complications stemming from plastic surgery at a hospital in Marina del Rey, Calif., US Weekly reported.
The 38-year-old was asked what in his life he has sacrificed for his success, and he said, "my mom."
"If I had never moved to L.A. she'd be alive," the fashion designer said of his beloved mother, who inspired his design house DONDA, according to E Online. "I don't want to go far into it because it will bring me to tears."
In the years following his mother's death, West has started his own family with Kim Kardashian and has re-evaluated his priorities. He told Q that his 2-year-old daughter, North, is his first priority.
"While [Nori's] here in Europe I have to have six hours a day with her because otherwise I'll just work and she'll get scheduled around meetings," he said, according to US Weekly. "Instead, the meetings get scheduled around her."
The rapper still finds ways to keep his mother's memory alive, he released a ballad single right before 2015 titled
"Only One" in which he pays tribute to his late mother and to his daughter. He collaborated with Sir Paul McCartney on the song. According to E Online, West also "got tattoos honoring them both earlier this year."
His wife, Kim, is currently pregnant with their second child.
