Louisville Basketball Recruiting: VJ King Confirms Commitment, Team's First for 2016
ByAfter locking up coach Rick Pitino for a decade and landing two key graduate transfers for the upcoming season, Louisville is taking care of its future.
According to ESPN, five-star small forward V.J. King, from Fairfax, Va., is Louisville's first major commitment in the class of 2016. King was reportedly considering a list of several elite programs like UConn, Kentucky and Arizona.
King confirmed his decision on his Instagram account, posting a picture of him facing away from the camera, but with a backwards Louisville ball cap. He wrote, "Words cannot express the feeling. All the glory and praise goes to the man upstairs... This is only the beginning."
King started playing high school basketball at Paul VI in Fairfax before moving to Ohio to attend St. Vincent-St. Mary's, the same high school LeBron James attended. A highly touted wing player, King is likely going to replace Damion Lee, a graduate forward who transferred to Louisville from Drexel, ESPN noted.
Pitino and his Louisville staff are now reportedly turning their attention to other highly-rated class of 2016 prospects like Markelle Fultz and Alterique Gilbert.
"I'd say over the past week, there's been a lot of conversation and a lot of dialogue," Glenn Farello, King's high school coach, told the Courier Journal. "He came up with the decision the last couple days. We wanted to get through exams, and he finished today, so he pulled the trigger."
ESPN ranks King 25th overall on their list of the 100 best prospects in the class of 2016. Rivals.com and 247 Sports agree on King's five-star rating.
