Iowa State University's (ISU) search for a new head men's basketball coach appears to be over, as Steve Prohm is expected to soon accept the job.
Citing unnamed sources, both ESPN and CBS Sports reported Monday that Prohm agreed with ISU to replace Fred Hoiberg, who left the school to coach the NBA's Chicago Bulls. Prohm was reportedly among candidates to interview for the ISU job over the weekend in Atlanta, a list that included several people.
With a candidate list that included Stephen F. Austin's Brad Underwood, Valparaiso's Bryce Drew, N.C. Central's LeVelle Moton and Iowa State assistant coach T.J. Otzelberger, it did not appear likely the search would be finished so quickly.
Prohm will leave his head coaching post at Murray State, where he led the Racers to a 104-29 overall record from 2011 to last season, in which they went 16-0 in the Ohio Valley Conference.
After back-to-back Big 12 Tournament titles and the return of multiple upperclassmen, ISU figures to be a top-10 preseason team.
With the top high school prospects almost entirely off the board, Prohm will likely turn his attention quickly to shoring up commitments and signings Hoiberg secured before departing for the NBA.
The two-time Ohio Valley Coach of the Year was originally up for the head men's basketball coaching job at Alabama, his alma mater. After the Tide hired Avery Johnson, Prohm became a natural fit for the Cyclones.
