Police are investigating the mysterious death of a woman discovered in an abandoned car near the University of Wisconsin - Green Bay (UWGB) campus.

An officer noticed the car around 2:30 a.m. Monday on a standard patrol route, Fox 11 reported, and found a woman inside dead of apparent gunshot wounds. Police did not disclose her identity.

UWGB released a statement Monday morning confirming the campus would be operational, as police believe there is no imminent threat. However, the police did not locate a murder weapon, nor have they identified a suspect.

The school notified the campus community of a possible homicide that took place near campus around 3 a.m. in an emergency email and text message notice.

"The case has been turned over to Green Bay Police Department for investigation," read an update distributed about three hours later. "The victim is not a student and we do not believe she had ties to the campus community. Officers from UW-Green Bay and the Green Bay Police Department are on scene and will continue to patrol the campus and surrounding area.

"The campus buildings, routinely locked at night, are now open for business. Please stay off the campus trails at this time."

UWGB encouraged anyone with information to contact the school's Public Safety office at (920) 465-2300. If the matter is an emergency, then 911.
