The UConn Huskies may be quietly putting together an American Athletic Conference contender for this season, adding college basketball's top transfer players.
Sterling Gibbs' former AAU coach confirmed to ESPN the ex-Seton Hall guard is taking advantage of the NCAA's graduate transfer rule by going to Storrs, Conn. Gibbs also announced his decision on his Twitter account.
The six-foot-two guard was reportedly also considering Ohio State, Pittsburg, Virginia Commonwealth and N.C. State for potential transfer destinations. Gibbs began his college basketball career at Texas before playing the last two seasons at Seton Hall.
He led the Pirates in scoring last season, averaging 16.3 points per game, establishing himself as a potent sharpshooter with .431 field goal and .436 three-point percentages. It is unclear if Gibbs will be UConn's primary ball handler next season, but he dished out just less than four assists per season at Seton Hall.
Gibbs is the second transfer student-athlete coach Kevin Ollie has added to his team, ESPN noted, as he joins Shonn Miller, a forward who averaged 16.8 points and 8.5 rebounds per game for Cornell last season.
In addition to the two transfers, UConn has a commitment from Jalen Adams, a four-star point guard from Roxbury, Mass. and the 25th overall player on the ESPN 100 list. UConn is also in pursuit of four-star forward Tevin Mack, whose prospective schools include Virginia Commonwealth and South Carolina.
Ollie is also seeing four starters from last season return, who will help Gibbs and Miller establish an experienced roster. Additionally, UConn's history fostering guards should help Adams' adjustment to the college game be a bit more smooth.
