After locking up head men's basketball coach John Calipari's with a massive extension before the season, the University of Kentucky tacked on an additional year for good measure.

Kentucky Sports Radio first reported Tuesday that the two sides were close to agreeing on a one-year extension to the seven-year deal Calipari signed before the start of this past season. The extension is for $8 million and now makes the contract run through the 2021-2022 season.

ESPN's Andy Katz confirmed the report, citing an unnamed source. Calipari signed his last extension less than a year ago, agreeing to a seven-year deal for $52.5 million last June.

Like that one, the new extension comes in the midst of rumors circulating about a possible jump to the NBA. At 56 years old, Calipari has achieved huge success at the collegiate level both on the court and on the recruiting trail. Some reports have suggested the coach still wants to go back to the NBA to right his past failures in the league.

Also like his last extension, Calipari is seemingly trying to squash those rumors by letting his actions speak out.

Unlike the last extension, Kentucky seems to be in a transitional phase like never before. Known for generating one-and-done types of players in his program, Calipari led Kentucky to a 38-0 mark going into the Final Four on the strength of a roster stacked with freshmen, sophomores and even a junior or two.

Now, Calipari is tasked with making up for seven players who are leaving Kentucky to declare for the NBA Draft. His recruiting class is also not as strong as it has been in past years, but the extra year on his contract represents Kentucky's utmost faith in their coach.
