All but cleared in the investigation of Brittany Mills' murder, La'el Collins has reportedly agreed to sign with the Dallas Cowboys.

The Baton Rouge Advocate learned Collins told investigators he was in New Orleans the night Mills was killed, but was there for a NBA playoff basketball the next day. He also reportedly said he had not spoke to Mills in the months since she told him of her pregnancy and that there was a chance the child was his. ESPN's Josina Anderson learned Collins also took a polygraph test and passed.

Collins left the meeting still not considered a suspect. Charean Williams, of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, first learned of Collins' deal with the Cowboys and ESPN's Adam Schefter obtained details of the contract.

According to NOLA.com, police confirmed Collins was not the father of Mills' baby, who died about a week after doctors delivered him in the wake of the shooting. News of Mills being shot and killed broke just before the NFL Draft and teams reportedly dropped Collins off their boards when police sought to question him.

Considered a surefire first-round selection, Collins went undrafted even though police stressed the former LSU offensive lineman was not a suspect.

Considered by some as the best offensive lineman available in the draft, this unprecedented situation allowed Collins to virtually handpick the NFL team he wanted to play for. The offensive lineman reportedly met with Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan as well as Miami Dolphins personnel who came accompanied by Collins' former LSU teammates Jarvis Landry and Anthony Johnson.

Collins' initial payday may be well under what it would have been as a first-round pick, but he is eligible for a contract restructuring after two years and for free agency after three. As a draftee, those would have come after three and four seasons, respectively.
