After an up-and-down season ended without an NCAA Tournament bid, the Cal Golden Bears are looking to take a huge step forward in the Pac-12 with a surprisingly strong recruiting class.

In his first full recruiting cycle at Cal, coach Cuonzo Martin now secured a commitment from Jaylen Brown, a five-star small forward who ranks fourth overall on the ESPN 100 list. Martin already signed Ivan Rabb, a five-star power forward who ESPN ranked eighth overall.

Brown's AAU coach confirmed to ESPN his player's commitment to Cal. Brown was considered a number of schools, but reportedly only visited Kansas, Kentucky, UCLA, North Carolina and Michigan.

Cal did not seem as if they had a shot at Brown, ESPN reported. Martin was hoping to recruit Caleb Swanigan, a five-star center ranked ninth overall on the ESPN 100, to join Rabb in a move meant to sway Brown to Berkeley. Though Swanigan committed to Michigan State, Cal was still able to secure Brown.

The second-ranked wing player, ESPN's evaluators called Brown "one of the most powerful wing players in the class." He is seen as a complete small forward prospect whose game should transition seamlessly to the college game.

Rabb has more untapped potential, ESPN noted, given his six-foot-11, 210-pound frame and supreme athleticism. With some development, Rabb could be a dominant force on offense and defense.

Martin's high-profile commitments jumped Cal's recruiting class to sixth overall in ESPN's rankings, a rise of 22 places.
