Gus Malzahn's offense may be getting a bit less run-heavy this season, as Jeremy Johnson was officially named the Auburn Tigers' week one starting quarterback.

According to ESPN, there was little doubt Johnson would win the position, but what remains to be seen is how he changes the Tigers' offensive game plan. Johnson came into this season as the front-runner and only bolstered his claim throughout spring practices.

Spending the last two seasons backing up Nick Marshall, Johnson has only taken 78 pass attempts, but has completed an impressive 73 percent of those. Johnson, a fix-foot-five junior, may not be the runner Marhsall is, but he has huge arm strength and has ideal size for a pocket passer.

"I'm very excited about this year, and I'm pretty sure the rest of the guys are, too," he told the Tigers' website after the team's spring game Saturday. "We're just coming on as a team and building team chemistry on and off the field."

With Marshall under center, Auburn would run the ball mercilessly and averaged more than 250 yards per game on the ground last season, a figure that was actually a bit lower than it was the year before.

For Johnson to take over Auburn's starting QB role, he knew he had to step up as a leader, ESPN reported. Football staffers praised their new starting QB for making good on his offseason goal.

Johnson only played in the first half of the spring game, completing 14 passes in 22 attempts and throwing for 252 yards and two touchdowns. Even with the run-heavy approach with Marshall at the helm, Auburn was not afraid to take shots down the field, an area where Johnson should excel.
