After losing Tyus Jones to the NBA, Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski has his next point guard coming to Durham.

According to Rivals.com, Krzyzewski always had his next point guard and it was just a matter of when he was arriving. A five-star recruit from Chatsworth, Calif., Derryck Thornton was initially committed to Duke as part of the class of 2016.

That changed when Jones decided to enter the draft after his freshman season at Duke. But Krzyzewski's need for a point guard next season was a bit more pressing, as senior Quinn Cook was also out of eligibility.

Thornton's reclassification to the class of 2015 is a huge lift for Duke, bolstering Krzyzewski's recruiting class simultaneously. ESPN rated Thornton the 11th overall prospect this year and third-best point guard.

At six-foot-one and 175 pounds, Thornton is similar in size to Jones, but plays as a "true point guard," ESPN noted. Whereas Jones was a lethal shooter from range, Thornton's best offensive weapon is his ball handling abilities and court vision. Thornton's jump shot will need improvement, but his quickness and athleticism make him effective in driving to the hoop.

"Coach K [Mike Krzyzewski] and [assistant] Jeff Capel came in for the visit and they told me how much confidence they have in me to be their point guard next year. They were very prepared about my game and their plan for me," Thornton told ESPN. "They told me they could have went after fifth-year transfers but wanted me instead. I am excited about the opportunity and the challenge."
