Wayne Community College (WCC) in Goldsboro, N.C. was on lockdown Monday morning after a shooting that has left one person killed.
The Greensboro News-Argus reported on the scene around 9 a.m. that the local police and Sheriff's Office were pursuing an active shooter. The newspaper has been reporting the story in real time on Twitter.
Town officials confirmed one person died during the shooting. It is not clear how many rounds the suspect fired or if anyone else has been injured. Police have not been able to determine the suspect's motive or disclose any information about the victim.
Shortly after breaking the story, there was a brief period where it seemed as though a hostage situation was unfolding, but that proved to be untrue.
Around 10 a.m., the Argus learned a group of "students and faculty barricaded themselves in once they heard what was going on." Police have since began evacuating WCC's buildings while sweeping them for any lingering threat. The suspect in the shooting was not apprehended.
According to CNN, the suspect law enforcement is looking for is a five-foot-11 white male with a bald head, a goatee and a tattoo over his left eye. He was last seen wearing "light-colored pants" and a blue jacket.
As of 10:30 a.m., students and faculty continued to trickle out of the WCC buildings escorted by police, but the lockdown remained in effect as the shooter was still at large.
WRAL learned Tommy's Road Elementary School was also placed on lockdown while Wayne Early Middle College closed its campus.
