Sam Dekker has ended the speculation about whether or not he will declare for the NBA Draft, announcing he will forgo his senior season at Wisconsin.
According to ESPN, Dekker averaged 19 points per game during the NCAA Tournament, which was about four points higher than his average during the season. After Wisconsin's loss to Duke in the National Championship Game, Dekker seemed unsure about his decision regarding the NBA.
"These past three years have been the best, most memorable years of my life," Dekker said in a statement released by the school. "Growing up in the state and being able to wear Wisconsin across my chest has been a dream come true.
"After lots of thoughts and prayers, I've decided that it is in my best interest to enter the NBA Draft at this time. It is difficult to leave Madison and the only state I've called home, but I'm excited for the next chapter of my life."
Dekker's outstanding performance in the Big Dance is likely to improve his draft stock. During Wisconsin's run, the six-foot-nine small forward also displayed a great jump shot, hitting 15 three pointers in 36 attempts.
"He was probably in the 20-25 range before the tournament, but now he'll likely be a lottery pick," an unnamed NBA executive told ESPN. "He made big shots throughout the tournament."
Dekker can be streaky as a shooter, but he can make up for an off-night with his above average ball handling skills and his ability to drive to the basket. He has great athleticism for his size, further complemented by a high motor and basketball IQ.
"I truly can't say thank you enough to my teammates, coaches, training staff and the fans, for everything they've done," Dekker said in his statement. "I am so grateful for the opportunities Coach Ryan and UW-Madison have given me. I couldn't have asked for anything more from my experience."
