Authorities may have found the remains of a Virginia college student missing for more than a month, but need a medical examiner's review to make sure.

According to the Virginia Pilot, police found the human remains in waist-high grass near the Virginia - North Carolina border, some 50 miles from the missing student's home. Police sent an officer to inform the family of the discovery.

Anjelica "AJ" Hadsell, an 18-year-old freshman at Longwood University in Farmville, Va., has been missing since March 2. At the time of her disappearance, police did not suspect foul play.

"We're just praying that all of this is resolved swiftly, and we're just trying to work together as a family," Timothy Moran, a family friend and minister, told the Pilot on behalf of the family. "Everybody's mind is going a hundred miles an hour.

"Everyone wants Anjelica home. That's the main goal. It's not about anybody else but AJ at the moment."

Police arrested Hasdell's stepfather Wesley last month on charges of obstructing justice and burglary. His defense attorney said he became overactive in trying to help with the search, but prosecutors allege he was trying to impede it. It is not clear if police see Wesley Hasdell as a possible suspect.

They are currently in the process of canvassing the area, which could take longer than usual in this particular case.

"We'll be out here for a couple days," Officer Sam Shenouda, a police spokesman, told the Pilot. "The property is overgrown, mostly wooded. They're literally going to be combing through every inch of this property searching for evidence."

AJ Hasdell's school has acknowledged the recent development, but said they will not draw any conclusions until the investigation is complete.

"The Longwood University community is closely following news reports out of Tidewater concerning the search for our missing student, Anjelica "AJ" Hadsell," the school said in a statement. "As we await further news, our thoughts and prayers remain with AJ's family at this difficult time."
