Michigan Football Roster News: Iowa Transfer QB Jake Rudock Picks Michigan, Can Play Right Away
ByJim Harbaugh added an experienced quarterback to his Michigan Wolverines depth chart by securing Iowa transfer Jake Rudock.
Citing an unnamed source, ESPN reported Rudock chose the University of Michigan after the Big Ten conference granted him a transfer waiver to play immediately at a new school. In two seasons for the Iowa Hawkeyes, Rudock threw for 4,819 yards and 34 touchdowns.
But Rudock brings to the table something only one other QB on Michigan's roster has: experience. A fifth-year senior, Rudock and junior Shane Morris are the only QBs expected to compete for the starting competition. However, in two seasons Morris has only attempted 87 passes and thrown for less than 400 yards.
Thus far, only Morris, early enrollee freshman Alex Malzone and redshirt freshman Wilton Speight have been participating in the Wolverines' spring practices. Zach Gentry, a four-star recruit in Harbaugh's first class, will get to Michigan in the summer.
Also arriving on campus this summer will be John O'Korn, a QB who transferred to Michigan from Houston. Unlike Rudock, O'Korn will not be eligible to play right away and will have to wait for the following season.
The Big Ten normally does not allow student-athletes to play right away if they transfer within the conference, ESPN noted, but Rudock received a waiver to bypass the rule.
With three quarterbacks already practicing with the team and two more expected in the summer, Michigan's football staff is not close to choosing a starter. Without a full offseason to recruit, Harbaugh has gotten creative in finding his team's QB for the upcoming season.
"They've all taken their time as they stood out," Michigan offensive coordinator Tim Drevno told the Detroit Free Press of the team's starting QB competition thus far. "We feel good about it, absolutely.
"We don't play a game until Thursday, September 3," he said. "There's a process to this. That's what we've always done everywhere we go. You take your steps and you go. Keep working every day."
