Laramie's first-ever community garden located on private property is now being developed.
Peggy McCrackin, a graduate student at UW, owns the property located at 1964 N. 13th St. She plans to use the majority of her front yard to establish a sustainable community garden. Students in UW Campus Sustainability class are assisting her on the project.
As part of their service learning project, Jessica Neuwerth, junior biology major from Rawlins, and energy resource science major Ian Gonnella from Jackson are designing a rain capture system and a composting system for the garden. Law student Nick Norris from Buffalo is researching potential liability issues for the garden.
McCrackin says she hopes the garden will not only provide healthy, locally grown food, but also will serve as a platform for neighborhood interaction.
"I intend for this garden to not only provide healthy, locally grown food, but also to serve as a platform for neighborhood interaction," she says.
The student team will help spread the word about the garden.
