This year's Wichita State Shockers (7) team may not be chasing a perfect season, but they are trying to defy odds all the same.

When compared to their opponents Friday, the Indiana Hoosiers (10), Wichita State's 11 NCAA Tournament appearances seem insignificant. Despite their youth this year, Indiana has made 37 tournament appearances, eight Final Fours and five National Titles in their storied experience.

In fact, the last team to go undefeated from week one to the end of the Big Dance was the 1975-1976 Hoosiers. The Shockers then took their unblemished record to the Round of 32 last year and the team that beat them, Kentucky, is now on the same path.

Wichita State has the benefit from five players returning from last season's team and three from two years ago when they made the Final Four. But unlike Indiana, the school has little tourney experience.

"I just witnessed UAB, which probably has zero NCAA tournament experience, beat Iowa State, which has tons of NCAA experience," Wichita State coach Greg Marshall said in a pregame press conference, according to the Associated Press. "Once the ball is tossed, I don't think it means that much at all. It's just another game."

Marshall's counterpart, Tom Crean, said his younger squad will have to make up for a lack of tournament experience by matching the Shockers' intensity.

"There doesn't look like there is any trepidation, any nervousness, when they play," Crean said. "They're a very, very confident group. And for one day, we've got to have that same level of confidence."
