The Harvard Crimson (13) have two wins in four NCAA Tournament appearances, but both have come in their last two opening games.

Trying to end that streak are the North Carolina Tar Heels (4), coming off an up-and-down season in which they finished as the ACC Tournament's runner up. As if the Heels needed added incentive to win their first game of the Big Dance, Harvard's current coach, Tommy Amaker, played college ball for Duke.

Harvard is coming off another Ivy League title, but this year Amaker sees his team going farther than the round of 32.

"I think that's obvious, and we certainly have that, and we're proud of that," he said in a pregame press conference, according to the Associated Press. "That's not going to necessarily help us rebound the ball against Carolina, but I do think the fact that our kids, we have a veteran team, many of our players have had experience in the tournament, have had success and experience in the tournament. We're hopeful to draw on that."

North Carolina coach Roy Williams has his team well aware of what their opponents can do. In stark contract to Harvard, the Tar Heels play in what was arguably the most competitive basketball conference this season. But Williams remembers the kind of player Amaker was.

"He could score, he could defend, he was a coach on the court. He didn't make silly mistakes. He didn't try to do things that he couldn't do," Williams said in his pregame remarks. "And I'm not saying he was limited because he was not. He was not going to try to drive down the lane and jump over and dunk on somebody. He'd make the smarter play.

"They don't try to do things they can't do. I think one of the greatest skills in basketball is knowing your strengths and playing to them, and knowing your weaknesses and making sure that's not the biggest factor."
