HOUSTON - (April 2012) - Rice University's Shepherd School of Music will close its spring season April 20 with a performance by the symphony orchestra, the Rice Chorale, Houston Masterworks Chorus and the Sam Houston State University Chorale. The concert will be at 8 p.m. at Rice University in Alice Pratt Brown Hall's Stude Concert Hall.
The evening's program will include the "Adagietto" movement from Gustav Mahler's "Symphony No. 5," Olivier Messiaen's "Colours of the Celestial City," conducted by Shepherd School Associate Conductor David Cho, and Johannes Brahms' "A German Requiem, Op. 45," performed with the Rice Chorale and conducted by Shepherd School Conductor Larry Rachleff.
"It's always bittersweet performing the last concert of the season with these remarkably gifted students, some of whom are moving on to the professional world or to additional schooling elsewhere," Rachleff said. "We always try to end the season with performances that incorporate as many Shepherd School musicians as we can, and with this final concert, we have that very opportunity. To collaborate with Tom Jaber's choral forces, our student soloists and great musicians from our orchestra on a monumental work such as the Brahms 'Requiem' is the most fitting conclusion to this very rich year that we have enjoyed together."
Jaber, director of choral activities, leads the Rice Chorale and Houston Masterworks Chorus. "This is going to be a glorious experience," he said. "The 'Requiem' is one of the great masterpieces of all time. It's a momentous occasion to collaborate with Larry Rachleff, who is a wonderful conductor and musician. We need large choral forces for this particular work, and I'm thrilled that Rice Chorale will be joined by Houston Masterworks Chorus and the Sam Houston State Chorale. It gives these groups more exposure to great music-making opportunities."
Admission (reserved seating) is $12, but students and senior citizens can purchase tickets for $10.
