The Johns Hopkins Carey Business School has appointed James E. Rogers, founder of a media company that owns 11 NBC and FOX affiliate television stations in five Western states, as an executive in residence.Rogers will serve in the position at the business school for three weeks beginning April 9.

As executive in residence, he will share with Carey students, faculty, and staff members his insights into the creation, growth, and operation of successful businesses. He is also expected to interact with members of the Maryland business community, and on April 12 he will deliver the school's annual William M. and Katherine B. Ginder Lecture at Carey's Harbor East campus.

Rogers's media company, Intermountain West Communications Co., was established in 1979. It is headquartered in Las Vegas.

Rogers earned Bachelor of Science in accounting and Bachelor of Law degrees from the University of Arizona and a Master of Law degree from the University of Southern California. He holds honorary doctorates from several universities and is a member of the State Bar Associations of Nevada, Arizona, and California. From May 2005 through June 2009, he served as the ninth chancellor of the Nevada System of Higher Education. The James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona is named in his honor. He also is a member of the Board of Overseers of the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School.

From 1964 through 1988, Rogers practiced law in Las Vegas. He became a member of the board of directors of Nevada National Bank in 1981 and was chairman from 1985 to 1987. In 1995, he was a founder and board member of Community Bank of Nevada. Three years later, he left Community Bank to form Nevada First Bank, which merged with the Bank of Nevada, where Rogers served on the board of directors. He was also on the board of directors of Meadows Bank in Nevada.

Rogers has served on the board of trustees of the New York University School of Law, the board of councilors of the Washington University in St. Louis School of Law, the board of councilors of the University of New Mexico School of Law, the deans' finance committee of the University of Idaho College of Law, the executive committee of the board of councilors of the University of Southern California School of Law, the dean's council of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Law, and the dean's finance committee of the University of Arizona law school.

Rogers is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the National Law Center in Tucson, Ariz., and was president of the Idaho State University Foundation. He served as a board member of the Motion Picture and Television Fund and is one of the first nine people elected to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Business Hall of Fame.

Active supporters of education, Rogers and his wife, Beverly, have made substantial financial contributions to various colleges and universities. Their gift of $137 million to the University of Arizona College of Law is the largest made to the University of Arizona and the largest gift to any American law school. In 1999, Mr. Rogers was listed as one of the top 11 philanthropists in the nation by Time magazine because of his gifts or pledged gifts of more than $275 million to colleges and universities.
