One of the top quarterbacks in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) is taking a major step and transferring to Oregon.

According to ESPN, Vernon Adams is on track to graduate from Eastern Washington State University (EWSU) this spring and will enroll at the University of Oregon (UO) as a graduate student. OU has reportedly worked out a financial aid agreement with EWSU, cementing the impending transfer.

Adams confirmed the news on his Twitter account Monday afternoon, but he told the Oregonian he had his mind made up Sunday night.

"This was the hardest decision of my life," he told the newspaper Monday. "I just thought this would be a great opportunity for my family and myself to accomplish things that I've been dreaming about since I was little.

"Heisman, national championship, playing at the Rose Bowl and playing at Oregon. I love it here at Eastern, but this is what I've been dreaming about."

Eastern Washington plays in the FCS' Big Sky conference, which does play Pac-12 teams, Oregon's conference, from time to time. ESPN called two of his games against Pac-12 teams "two of his best performances."

That distinction is not to be taken lightly either. Last season, Adams threw for 3,483 yards to go along with 35 touchdowns against eight interceptions. The season before, he threw for 55 touchdowns and 4,994 yards.

Adams will be eligible to play immediately, though he cannot join the team until he finishes his academic semester at EWSU and receives his degree. Then he will enter an open competition to replace Mariota, who will go down as one of the greatest college football quarterbacks of all time.

The Oregonian reported UCLA and Texas were also pursuing Adams, but the QB chose Oregon over returning to EWSU. He told the newspaper he gelled with Oregon's receivers and liked what the coaches had to say.

"They're competitors and they would say, 'We like to compete here and we know you can compete," Adams said. "We know you're a really good QB, you can compete for the starting job along with Jeff Lockie and the rest of the QBs.' I like to compete and I like to win. I put myself up to the challenge and hopefully I'll get there and win the job."

Unfortunately for Adams, he will only have four weeks in fall practices to earn the starting position, but if he does, Oregon is scheduled to play Eastern Washington in Eugene on Sept. 5.
