As part of the requirement to redraw council district lines every decade, the Los Angeles City Council on Friday approved placing the USC University Park Campus and its adjacent facilities in the 9th District.

Prior to this change, parts of the University Park Campus were in the 8th District and parts were in 9th District. During hearings before the Redistricting Commission and City Council, USC made only one request - that it be treated like all other universities in the city of Los Angeles and the University Park Campus be placed in a single district. The university argued that "the University Park Campus is where we teach our students, where our students live, where we conduct our back office operations, where our students and faculty shop, eat and go to the movies, and where we focus our community outreach efforts."

"We are delighted that the City Council granted our request to place our University Park Campus in a single district," said Thomas Sayles, senior vice president of University Relations for USC. "We would like to thank them and we are looking forward to working with the entire council, and particularly with our new Councilmember, Jan Perry."

Consistent with the practice of putting university campuses in a single district, the USC Health Sciences Campus, located northeast of downtown Los Angeles, will remain entirely in the 14th district, represented by Councilmember Jose Huizar.
