Michigan Football Recruiting News: 4-Star QB Messiah deWeaver De-Commits, But Was That Harbaugh's Intention?
ByFour-star quarterback recruit Messiah deWeaver has de-committed from Michigan, but it is not clear why.
According to the Detroit News, deWeaver committed to Michigan in June when Brady Hoke was still the head football coach. Jim Harbaugh took over the team in late Dec. and had to get into recruiting right away.
He did not waste any time, as MLive.com reported Harbaugh got Zach Gentry to switch his commitment from Texas to Michigan shortly before shoring up Alex Malzone's commitment, which was also made to Hoke.
247 sports rates Malzone and Gentry as three-star QB recruits, each with a grade of 88, whereas deWeaver has a 90 rating and three stars. But MLive.com argued that Harbaugh is not looking for a spectacular QB recruit, just someone who can move the ball and limit turnovers.
For example, Harbaugh has reportedly met with five-star QB recruit Jacob Eason, who 247 Sports rated a 98 and has committed to Georgia. Eason appears content to stay with Georgia, but it shows that Harbaugh is aiming high for his next great QB.
The new coach at Michigan produced Andrew Luck at Stanford, then went to San Francisco and helped Alex Smith revive his career before transforming Colin Kaepernick. So how does a QB guru lose a commitment from a four-star recruit like deWeaver?
ESPN evaluators called deWeaver a "late bloomer" who is currently tall and lanky with untapped potential. Bleacher Report noted Harbaugh may have not paid enough attention to deWeaver, intentionally or not. The young passer has reopened his recruitment and is reportedly interested in Michigan State.
However deWeaver's de-commitment came to pass, it is evident that Harbaugh fully knows what he is doing and has not lost a step in the recruiting game. He has enough QBs for an open competition come spring and will not get a late start next winter, allowing him to pursue the top high school QBs.
