Students at Ohio State University (OSU) can drive to AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas in about 15 hours, or fly there in two, but those hoping to make that trip had better bring it up with their professors.
The OSU spring semester starts on Monday, Jan. 12, the same day as the National Championship football game between Ohio State and Oregon.
According to the Associated Press, OSU Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies Wayne Carlson sent a campus-wide memo recently addressing the big game. Carlson notified students wishing to travel to Dallas for the game to clear their absence from class on Monday (and possibly Tuesday) with their teachers.
Carlson warned that students without their professors' leave to potentially miss the first two class days may be kicked off the course's roster.
Regardless, the OSU administration has made their enthusiasm for their football team's success known. The school's president, Michael V. Drake, released a statement after the Buckeyes upset Alabama in thrilling fashion in the Sugar Bowl.
"All of Buckeye Nation is celebrating this outstanding victory," he said. "We have overcome a great deal of adversity this year, and this spectacular performance is such a strong testament to the spirit and drive of our players and coaching staff who have brought this victory home. This is a great team, and we look forward to the national championship game in Texas. Go Bucks!"
Ohio State beat Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship and then Alabama with their third-string quarterback Cardale Jones. Ironically enough, Jones tweeted back in Oct., 2012: "Why should we have to go to class if we came here to play FOOTBALL, we ain't come to play SCHOOL, classes are POINTLESS."
He served a one-game suspension for the tweet, but that was when he was the backup to J.T. Barrett, who was the backup to Braxton Miller, a Heisman Trophy preseason favorite. Jones has since said he regretted that tweet and said he was mad over the grade he got on a test, as he had studied thoroughly.
