Nick Saban and his staff have their offseason work cut out for them, as a trio of juniors are reportedly declaring for the NFL Draft.
ESPN learned Thursday that wide receiver Amari Cooper and running back T.J. Yeldon will join safety Landon Collins in going pro. Yeldon is the only one of the three Alabama juniors not expected, as of now, to be drafted in the first round.
While quarterbacks Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston are expected to be taken first overall and second overall, Cooper could well go third overall, or at least somewhere in the first five picks. Evaluators have described Cooper as a complete receiver prospect with incredible talent and desirable intangible qualities.
"There's nothing Cooper doesn't do really well, and he's probably more explosive than he looks because his movement is so precise," ESPN's NFL Draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. said recently. "He separates with ease, has a good sense of how to find space against a zone and will make contested catches. His work rate is legendary and will be a big selling point."
Collins may be taken shortly after Cooper, as Bleacher Report projected him to go seventh overall to the Chicago Bears. He is generally accepted to be the top safety in the draft class, but he could well be the first defensive back drafted. Rand Getlin first reported Collins' draft declaration for Yahoo Sports.
Yeldon is an intriguing prospect, but ESPN's evaluators do not believe he runs with the same power that top prospects like Melvin Gordon and Todd Gurley do. Yeldon projects to be a quicker, more agile runner rather than someone who can run defenders over, though he may need to improve how he protects the ball.
