Bo Pelini Introduced at Youngstown State as New Head Football Coach, Takes Shot at Nebraska
ByYoungstown State University (YSU) has introduced Bo Pelini as their new head football coach and he took the opportunity to dig in against the team that let him go.
According to ESPN, Pelini was hired Tuesday after being let go as Nebraska's head football coach at the end of Nov. Pelini said he is excited to get to call Jim Tressel, YSU's president, his new employer.
"I believe that I have a great situation here," Pelini said at his introduction, "have a tremendous athletic director, have a president who understands football, who's going to support me, something that I don't know if I've ever had."
The 47-year-old spent seven seasons at Nebraska and went 67-27, but never won a Big Ten conference title and never led the Cornhuskers into the National Title conversation. It was for this reason that Nebraska Chancellor Harvey Perlman reportedly supported athletic director Shawn Eichorst's decision to let Pelini go.
The newly hired Penguins coach also said he does not view Youngstown State as a stepping stone to another job. But he will still be coaching in Ohio State's backyard and under plain view of a former Buckeyes coach.
"I have a great administration and a community I believe in wholeheartedly," Pelini said. "It sets up to be a great environment for me to work in, a great environment for my family to live in and a great place to call home. Otherwise, I wouldn't have come back here.
"If I was looking for the next job, I'd be someplace else."
Pelini is now just the fifth FCS coach with past FBS experience.
"We are excited to have Bo Pelini as the Head Football Coach at Youngstown State University," YSU athletic director Ron Strollo said in a press release. "He is a dedicated family man who wants to be part of our community and make an impact in his hometown. He has been a successful coach throughout his career and our student-athletes will have the opportunity to play for a tremendous individual. We look forward to him leading our program and welcome him and Mary Pat home."
