College Football Playoff Rankings Week 15: Florida State Continues Slide, TCU Jumps to Third Overall
ByFlorida State (4) is still undefeated, but the College Football Playoff (CFP) committee seems ready to leave the defending champs out even if they win the ACC title game.
In the penultimate CFP rankings, Florida State fell another spot after another come-from-behind victory, this time against in-state rival Florida. With a notably weak schedule, the Seminoles seem as though they will have to beat Georgia Tech convincingly on Saturday in order to make the four-team playoff.
Coming off an Iron Bowl win over Auburn, Alabama held onto the top spot and Oregon remained in second after thrashing Oregon State on the road. Both teams figure to punch their CFP tickets with wins in their respective conference title games.
Taking Florida State's spot was TCU (3) after trouncing a Texas team that had won three in a row. But the Big 12 is in an awkward spot since they do not have a conference championship and since TCU lost to Baylor (6) earlier in the season.
The Big 12 has stated that the two teams could share the regular season title if they both win on Saturday, though Baylor would be technically be the champ. The decision would be a tactic to heighten the conference's chances at having a CFP representative. Either team could certainly benefit from another shaky performance from Florida State.
Joining Baylor on the outside looking in is Ohio State (5) and Arizona (7). Ohio State could win the Big Ten title, but it remains to be seen how effective they will be with Cardale Jones, who came into the season as the third string quarterback.
If Arizona upsets Oregon in the Pac-12 title game, they could vault themselves into the top four. Such a task seems less likely for Georgia Tech (11), Wisconsin (13) and Missouri (16), who are not favored in their respective conference championships.
The CFP committee releases their final rankings on Sunday, Dec. 7, revealing the Rose and Sugar Bowl semifinal matchups and other major bowl games. The announcement will start at 11:45 a.m. CT on ESPN.
