For the first time since 1986, the Territorial Cup will be played between two ranked teams, but the game has much more significant undertones than in-state bragging rights. Both the Sun Devils and Wildcats know that winning could mean a shot at playing Oregon for the Pac-12 title on Dec. 5. Upsetting the Pac-12 North champ could also lead to a College Football Playoff berth.
"This game is the single most important game of the year for us and for our fans," Sun Devils coach Todd Graham told reporters, according to ESPN. "Obviously it has a lot more meaning, both teams are going for their tenth win and the Pac-12 South championship is on the line, there is definitely a little extra importance added to this game."
Graham led the Sun Devils to a loud 58-21 win over Arizona last season, which earned them a spot in the Pac-12 title game. Reigning as the conference's coach of the year, Graham could win his third consecutive rivalry match over the Wildcats.
"I think it has become more relevant nationally now because of the seasons we are both having," Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez told reporters, according to ESPN. "You know that for your fans, particularly in state, that the rivalry game is going to mean a lot to them, but I promise it doesn't mean any more to them than it does to the players and coaches."
