The University of Florida (UF) will buy out Will Muschamp's head football coaching contract at season's end, but he does not want to stop working.
According to the Associated Press, Muschamp may have a good deal of appeal as a college football defensive coordinator rather than as a head coach. UF was his first head coaching job, but he previously served as defensive coordinator at LSU, Auburn, Texas and even the Miami Dolphins when Nick Saban was the coach there.
Muschamp's departure was ceremonious, as the school announced he would be able to finish the final two games on the Gators' schedule. There was also a press conference where Muschamp and UF's president and athletic director had nothing but nice things to say about one another.
Florida was 27-20 under Muschamp and 17-15 in the ultra-competitive Southeastern Conference. Muschamp acknowledged at the presser that he did not win enough games to keep his job.
Steve Spurrier, head football coach at South Carolina, declined to say whether or not he would want Muschamp as his defensive coordinator, but said the coach should be able to find work.
"If he wants to coach again next year, I'm sure a lot of people will be after him," Spurrier told the AP.
Along with Auburn, Florida State and Texas A&M, South Carolina is a top-flight college football program that could be in need of a new defensive coordinator after underwhelming seasons. One thing Florida did well under Muschamp was play defense.
"I'm looking forward to that next step, but what that will be I have no idea," Muschamp told the AP. "I haven't put any thought into that as far as where, what, when and how. I don't know all those things. Certainly, right now, my focus is on this team and getting us ready for these next two games."
