AP Top 25 College Basketball Poll 2014 Week 2: Rankings Mostly Unchanged, But That Won't Last Long
ByMost of the Associated Press' college basketball poll remained unchanged from the preseason to the second week of action, but that will change.
Kentucky is still number one after opening their season with two wins with Arizona, Wisconsin, Duke and Kansas rounding out a nearly unchanged top five. Then-25th-ranked Harvard was the only team to drop off the poll after losing to Holy Cross.
Kentucky almost suffered a week one upset against Buffalo, as they went into halftime down 38-33. But the Wildcats finished with 33 points in the second half while holding their opponents to 14 points.
The only changes that occurred were seventh-ranked Louisville swapping places with now-eighth-ranked Florida. 18th-ranked Oklahoma did the same with now-19th-ranked Michigan State, though the latter is going to have a chance to make a large jump in the poll.
But the poll is in for a shakeup, as the Spartans are scheduled to take on Duke on Tuesday, Nov. 18, the same day that Kentucky is scheduled to play Kansas. Both games are part of the Champions Classic in Chicago and will be aired on ESPN and WatchESPN.
"Now we go [play] Kansas and it's the same thing," Kentucky coach John Calipari said after the win over Buffalo, according to the AP. "We probably need another hit in the mouth to see where we are."
The Wildcats are a preseason favorite to compete for an NCAA Tournament one-seed, as they returned four starters from last year's team. However, they will need Aaron and Andrew Harrison, Willy Cauley-Stein and co. to step up against a strong Kansas team if they want to hold down their first overall ranking.
