Dave Brandon is officially out as the athletic director at the University of Michigan (UM) as the rumors of his departure were already swirling for some time.
ESPN first reported Brandon's resignation Friday, hours before UM had announced a press conference to make the official announcement. UM President Mark Schlissel named Jim Hackett the school's interim athletic director.
"This morning I accepted the resignation of Athletic Director David Brandon," Schlissel said in the presser, according to a transcript of his remarks. "Dave feels that it would be in the best interest of our student-athletes, the athletic department and the university community if he moved on to other challenges and allowed the important work of the department and university to continue without daily distractions. And I agree with this decision.
"I have spoken regularly with Dave over the last few weeks, and we both want what is best for Michigan Athletics, which is to be able to pursue the highest levels of excellence in all aspects of our programs, to support our 931 student-athletes, and to enhance the strong bond that athletics has helped the University foster with our students, alumni, and fans."
Nick Baumgardner wrote in a column for MLive.com that the search for a new AD should not be based on looking for a "Michigan Man," but rather a candidate that can do the job.
"Michigan is in need of a few saviors," he wrote. "And it doesn't matter if they know the words to 'The Victors' or not."
No team in college football history has won more games than Michigan and, at the helm of their most important team, coach Brady Hoke may be on his way out as well. The Wolverines are 1-3 in the Big Ten, 3-5 overall and one narrow home victory over Penn State away from being on a five game slide.
The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Hoke's job status has been in question for some time, but both he and Brandon came under further scrutiny for Shane Morris' mishandled concussion.
"To our alumni and others in the Michigan family, I want you to know that we are working to establish the right balance between academics, the competitiveness of our athletic programs, their financial stability and the athletic traditions we hold dear," Schlissel said. "To our students and student-athletes, I want you to know that the University of Michigan is behind you, always.
"To our fans, I want you to know that we value your support, your input, and your spirit."
