It will be really difficult for both the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (5) and Florida State Seminoles (2) to stay in the AP top five after their much-hyped Saturday night showdown.

Since claiming the top spot on the AP poll last season, Florida State has not lost a single game, yet they find themselves ranked second overall. While the Seminoles have look not quite as dominant in a weak ACC, Mississippi State has cut their way through a grueling SEC schedule to find themselves in first.

Neither team can say they have a tougher schedule than any SEC team in the conversation for the inaugural College Football Playoff, so tonight's game figures to have huge implications for the postseason. Both the Irish and Seminoles have a good shot at winning out after Saturday night, but those four playoff spots may well prove to be elusive for a one-loss team come selection time.

Notre Dame's defense has done a good job holding opponents' point totals down, but QB Everett Golson has been a major factor in the Irish's success this season. With both teams playing well-rounded football thus far, tonight's matchup could come down to which quarterback outdoes the other.

With Jameis Winston cleared to play this week amid an autograph investigation, Florida State's offense has its main cog.

Coach Brian Kelly and the Irish have a tough task going on the road, especially given their track record against top-five teams. According to ESPN, Notre Dame is 1-16 against such opponents since 1999.

"You get yourself in it consistently, and then you breakthrough and you start playing at that caliber," Kelly said ahead of the game. "I think it's a process and a journey that we're on as a program. And we expect to beat Florida State."
