Yale-NUS College will offer two additional degree programs, in law and in environmental studies, for students at the new college - a landmark collaboration between Yale University and the National University of Singapore (NUS).
Students at Yale-NUS are expected to graduate with honors degrees in arts or science in four years. With the additional degree programs, qualifying students could graduate with a second bachelor's degree in law from NUS or a master's degree in environmental studies from Yale for an additional year of study.
"A Yale-NUS education will widen the horizons of our students both intellectually and experientially with an exciting curriculum, global internships and co-curricular activities," said Professor Lily Kong, acting executive vice president for academic affairs at Yale-NUS. "The two new degree programs we have developed combine the breadth and depth of liberal arts education with the depth that comes with specializations, whether in law or environmental studies. We are confident that these opportunities will appeal to high-achieving students at Yale-NUS."
Double Degree Program in law
The Bachelor of Arts (Honors)-Bachelor of Laws (Honors) Double Degree Program will integrate an education in the sciences, humanities, and social sciences with legal professional training for prospective lawyers. This program will allow students to pursue a combination of liberal arts and law studies in five years, compared to the typical period of seven years required in the United States. As part of the program, Yale-NUS students will have access to the NUS Faculty of Law's study abroad and internship opportunities in Asia and beyond. NUS Law is widely regarded as Asia's leading law school, and a major hub for research on legal issues affecting Singapore, the region, and the globe.
Yale-NUS students graduating with the Bachelor of Laws (Honors) degree will be qualified to be admitted to the Singapore Bar to practice law in Singapore. NUS Law graduates presently hold the highest legal offices in Singapore, including the posts of chief justice and the attorney-general, and are senior practitioners in all areas of law. Alumni also include partners in top international firms in New York, London, Hong Kong, and Shanghai.
Concurrent Degree Program in environmental studies
The Concurrent Degree Program offered by Yale-NUS with the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies (F&ES) is designed for students who want to pursue careers in an environmental field. Eligible students will graduate with Bachelor of Arts (Honors) or Bachelor of Science (Honors) degrees from Yale-NUS, and a Master of Environmental Science or Master of Environmental Management degree from Yale University after five years of study.
As part of this program, Yale-NUS students will spend one semester during their junior year at Yale College in New Haven.
As part of its admissions outreach, Yale-NUS will be launching a special inaugural round of admissions in early February 2012 for qualifying National Service men in Singapore, as well as students who have completed their A-Levels and International Baccalaureate diplomas last year. About 150 students are expected to matriculate in August 2013.
